The Huntington Historical Society Resource Center and Archives
At the very core of the Society is the Resource Center and Archives containing historical, genealogical, and archival materials concerning the Town of Huntington from 1653 to the present day. An invaluable resource for those interested in local history, the library and archives include manuscript items, printed and visual materials and oral histories.

Manuscripts
These collections consist of original materials documenting life in the Huntington community from its founding to the present day. These unique and unpublished items are comprised of individual and family papers, ephemera, account books, events, and the records of local organizations such as schools and churches, and local businesses.

Book Collection
With a focus on the Town of Huntington this diverse collection consists of genealogies, the Nellie Ritch Scudder Collection of Long Island Genealogical Records, British and Irish material, cemetery and church records, histories, local government publications, and biographies.

Maps and Atlases
The collection includes printed and hand drawn maps and atlases from the 17th century to the present. Among the highlights are the 1858 Chace Map of Suffolk County, the 1873 Beers, Comstock and Cline Atlas of Long Island, and E. Belcher Hyde’s Atlas of Nassau County (1906 and 1914) and Suffolk County (1909 and 1917). Road maps, surveys, and property maps for specific locations are also available.

Newspapers
The newspaper collection consists of bound and unbound issues of a variety of local papers from the early 1820’s to the present day. Of special interest is The Long Islander (1839-present) founded by Walt Whitman whose issues include death notices, advertisements and the “village notes” columns focusing on local events, individuals, and “local gossip.”

Photograph Collection
The archives contains an extensive collection of photographs documenting the town from the late 19th through the 20th century. Images of people, places and events provide a visual history of the community. Among the local photographers highlighted are Ben Conklin, Robert Stone, Lyman Taft, and Harvey Weber.

Oral History
A collection of recordings made of local individuals recounting aspects of Huntington’s history. The collection also includes interviews with members of the town’s Afro-American, Latino and Italian-American community conducted in the late 1980s. These recordings provided the basis for the Society’s exhibit and related programming “Reaching for a Dream: Huntington’s Ethnic Heritage” in collaboration with the Town of Huntington and CUNY.

Records Search Service
Provides access to our archives. A search of material in the collection is conducted by experienced volunteers. Fees for this service are as follows:
For Huntington Historical Society Members: $15.00 paid in advance for resource review. $12.00 per hour thereafter. For Non-Members: $20.00 paid in advance for resource review $15.00 per hour thereafter. |

The Resource Center and Archives is located in the former Huntington Sewing and Trade School at 209 Main Street, Huntington Village.
Appointments are required for all researchers. Masks required.
There is a $10.00 donation per person per day for use of the collection. There is no charge for Huntington Historical Society members or students. Photocopies are 25¢ each.
