The Society’s newspaper collection consists of bound and unbound issues of a variety of local papers from the early 1820’s to the present day.
The Long Islander Newspaper, founded by Walt Whitman, is available on microfilm from 1839 to the present. Indexes to marriages and deaths from 1839-1880 are available as well as a comprehensive index to subjects and personal names from 1839-1862. Of special interest are the death notices, advertisements and the “village notes” columns focusing on local events, individuals, and “local gossip.”
