A Child’s Work and Play
The Kissam House and Barn Program
For Grades 4 -5
Designed to reinforce New York State’s Social Studies curriculum for grades 1 to 5 and BOCES-approved, this 2 hour program provided by a costumed educator includes a guided tour of the 1795 Dr. Daniel Kissam House, ancestral home of a wealthy doctor and his family.
Our barn program includes an interactive demonstration of the transformation of wool into yarn. Topics we discuss with the students include the development of Town of Huntington during the Federal period of George Washington, and the architectural design and function of the Kissam barn. Finally, students engage in four hands-on activity stations including the popular activity of weaving on a loom.
Students and teachers bring their own meals for a working lunch during which time we conduct an “old tyme” spelling bee. As a special treat, our educators will demonstrate butter churning, and the homemade butter will be served on cornbread.
