House Information
The 2019 Historic House Tour of the Huntington Historical Society will again feature five private homes that will be open to those on the tour. One of the properties was possible the first settlement house of the Sammis Family which came to Huntington in the late 17th century. This beautifully restored late 17th or early 18th century home stayed in the Sammis family for almost 200 years and was the site of one of the earliest grist mills in the Town of Huntington. It was later owned by the Van Schaick for almost 100 years and known as “Springmeade.”
A second house on the tour was built in 1828 by Zophar Ketcham across from the Old Huntington Green. Ketcham was a harness maker with a shop on what is today Park Avenue. It is reported that this house was made from the timbers of the 1st Presbyterian Church that had been torn down by the British soldiers who occupied Huntington during the Revolution.
Also on the 2019 tour is a late 19th century “cottage” named Halecroft that was built by the Huntington Company on the former farmland of Titus Conklin, overlooking Huntington Bay. This “cottage” was rented for the “season” by the Company as a summer house to wealthy and often notable families.
Rounding out the tour iis a late 19th century Victorian house that was run as the “Ivy Hotel” in the early 20th century in Cold Spring Harbor and one of the first houses built in Wincoma when the August Heckscher estate was developed in the mid-1920s.
