Five homes beautifully decorated for the holidays!
After a two year hiatus, the Huntington Historical Society's 2022 Historic Houses at the Holidays Tour is back!
Get in the holiday spirit while supporting a great cause: keeping Huntington’s history alive for future generations!
We invite you to join us for a "Visit to Sammisville." John Sammis, one of the original settlers of Huntington, built his homestead in 1665 on the west Shore of Huntington Harbor. Many of John's descendants followed suit and settled in what is today the village of Lloyd Harbor. Five of their homes, four privately owned, and one part of the Banbury Center of the Cold Spring Harbor Lab, are within a two-mile radius of the first 17th century house. These houses, built from the early 18th century through the 20th century, were lived in by generations of the Sammis families.
One early "Saltbox" was home to a Sammis family from 1730 until the 20th century. A typical Long Island half house, built in the early 19th century, was remodeled in 1870's in a very imposing Victorian French Empire style. But then, sold by a Sammis in 1925, it bloomed anew as a typical 5 bay Federal House. On the tour, look for a photo and architectural drawing of the traditions.
Please join us to learn about the history of these houses and their owners.
During the tour, cars will be parked at two locations in the area. Bus transport will be provided.
The tour will be headquartered in the Conklin Barn at 2 High Street, Huntington.
Tickets will include a raffle for $100 gift certificate to Mill Pond Restaurant.
Visit the Conklin barn for refreshments 12-4 pm.
Ticket prices member $40 / non-members $50
