Position Summary
The Huntington Historical Society is seeking a part-time Collections Care Assistant for a renewable contract period of six months. The successful candidate will work closely with the Collections Manager to catalog and care for the Society’s objects collection consisting of artifacts, costumes, textiles, pottery, furniture, decorative arts and fine arts.
This position is a part-time renewable contract position that requires sixteen hours per week for a period of six months. The hourly rate will be $15-$17 commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Cataloging artifacts
- Photographing artifacts
- Data entry
- Numbering objects
- Managing files
- Correcting environmental conditions as necessary
- Cleaning artifacts using museum level procedures and practices
- Working effectively with volunteers
- Assisting the Historian in researching and mounting displays
- Assisting in the creation of inventories of donations in preparation for cataloguing
- Conducting research on collections objects for inclusion in the database
- Assisting in deaccessioning processes
- Participation in occasional committee meetings
- Performing regular walk-throughs of historic houses and collections storage areas to monitor environmental conditions and object safety
-Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Possession of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in history, art history, museum studies, humanities or a related field
- Knowledge of museum/collection techniques relevant to storage, conservation, handling,
materials, record keeping, management and maintenance.
- Experience with Past Perfect preferred
- Interest in history, and more specifically Huntington’s history
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Sound computer skills
Working Conditions
Position will involve actively working in a variety of buildings within a few mile radius. Candidate
must be comfortable in rustic environments such as attics and barns. A desk and computer will
be utilized but the position will require an active/ hands-on approach to collection management.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 25 lbs, climb stairs, bend, squat, climb step ladders throughout the workday. A car
will be necessary to travel between buildings.
About the Huntington Historical Society
The Huntington Historical Society (HHS) is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Town of Huntington. The Society owns and maintains an extensive research library, as well as important local collections of paintings, photographs, costumes, furniture, and decorative arts. Seven historic buildings (four recognized on the National Register of Historic Places) across four sites are maintained and interpreted by the Society through events, tours and exhibits. The Trade School Building (1905) houses the Archives and Library Research Center and the staff offices. Recently restored and expanded, it contains genealogical and archival material concerning the town and its people from 1653. The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building (1892) is a former library, which now features our Huntington History and Decorative Arts Museum. The Society’s two historic house museums, which are central to many of the Society’s outreach and education activities, are the David Conklin Farmhouse Museum (1750) and the Dr. Daniel Whitehead Kissam House (1795).
