This program is a fascinating look into African American history on Long Island.  Students learn which households were most likely to have slaves as well as the difference between the northern and southern slave experience.  A tour of the Society’s Dr. Daniel W. Kissam house is included in the program along with the story of “Michael”, the slave owned by the Kissam family who was freed by Dr. Kissam with the manumission.  Local historian Rex Metcalf contributes insight into various cultural customs and provides incredible artifacts which were owned by local slaves.  Students will be thrilled to be able to handle these artifacts which contain such abundant history.
