In 1911, Ella J.
Conklin Hurd donated the David Conklin Farmhouse to the then 8 year old
and newly renamed Huntington Historical Society. Ella was a descendant
of one of the first families to settle in Huntington.
On Friday, April 19,
1912, the Huntington Historical Society opened the doors of the Conklin
House Museum to the public for the first time, making it Suffolk
County's first house museum. Visitors who toured the house that day saw
a "collection of articles... interesting and valuable... well worth
inspection." according to The Long-Islander.
This exhibit
celebrates the generosity and foresight of Mrs. Conklin Hurd. |
