January   Membership renewal appeal
  22 "Gratitude Gala" from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Conklin Farm House Barn.  This is a big Thank you for all of the people who have helped the Huntington Historical Society have a fabulous 2010.
February    
  22 An Introduction to Piracy, by Capt Mike, for youngsters 6 to 12 years old.  1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Conklin barn on High Street.  Fee is $15 per child and $5 per adult.
For the young, or the young at heart, who wish to sail the Spanish Main aboard a pirate ship, here is your chance to learn some basic skills.  There will be a short history of piracy, you will learn how to talk like a pirate, and some basic sailing terms.  You will learn how to use a compass, how to make and read a treasure map, and some basic knot tying.  Those who sign on will require some courage to try new things and make new friends.

 Tea with Dolly and Me.  1:00 to 3:00 at the Conklin Farm House.  It’s Tea Time for Dolly and Me! Children should bring their favorite doll and a tea cup. They will share stories about their dolls, create yarn dolls, do simple embroidery and make a toy. Learn all about dolls.   Refreshments to be served.
For children 6-11 years old. Admission $15.00 per child. Adults are $5.  (This event was so popular we had to add a second Tea.)
March 17 Conklin House lecture 1, Lecture 2:00 pm, (Refreshments 1:30).  Members Free, Non members $5    "The Golden Age of Piracy"
Learn about Long Island's connection to Captain Kidd's treasure and other pirate pillaging during this fascinating lecture.  Authentic Pirate grog will be served.
April 18 Tour the Old Burying Ground,
 1:00pm to 2:00 pm, $10 per child ( 9 years old and above) and $5 per adult.  (rain date April 20th.)  Participants will meet at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, 228 Main Street.  Contact us for reservations.  Attendance is limited.

  19 The School for Spies,
 1:00pm to 3:00 pm,  Children 6 to 12 years old $15 and Adults $5.  Refreshments will be served.  The program will be held in the Conklin Barn, corner of High Street and New York Avenue.   Contact us for required reservations.  Attendance is limited.
You are asked to join Robert Townsend, General Washington's chief spy for the Culper Spy Ring in Raynham Hall, Oyster Bay, to help save the Colonies from British rule.  You will be trained in the skills required by spying: observation, secret codes, discipline, manners and the planning that a spy needs to NOT GET CAUGHT.

In honor of Jupiter Hammon's 300th birthday, Rex Metcalf will discuss tracing early African Americans in Huntington.
 
  28 Theatre Fundraiser
Join friends, who are interested in supporting the Society, for an evening of Guys and Dolls at the John W Engeman Theatre.   Attending this light-hearted show with like-minded people is the perfect way to help preserve and share Huntington's heritage.
Tickets are $75 and refreshments will be served before the show.
May 1 Sheep to Shawl Festival, At the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum property Noon till 4:00.  Join us for this wonderful family event.  Enjoy sheep shearing, traditional textile demonstrations by local artisans and crafters, old fashioned games and children's activities, Llamas and Angora goats, and tours of our historic Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum.  Lively music will be presented by the Long Island Traditional Music Association throughout the day.
Note:  This event is made possible, in part, with public funds form the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).  In Suffolk County the Decentralization Program is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc., in partnership with the Suffolk Consortium of Arts Councils

Town Historian Robert Hughes will lead  a historical walking tour of Huntington Village, starting at 6:30.  Along the way we will stop at three pubs, all of which play a role in Huntington's history. At each stop participants will have enough time to enjoy a pint or two!  (Drinks are not included. Our last stop, Canterbury Ales will offer tour participants $5.00 16oz pints of either one of the Sam Adams' they have on tap, or $5.00 house Red or White wine) 
The tour will begin at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, located at 228 Main Street in Huntington Village, where participants will get a chance to view our new exhibit

22		 Salt Lake City research trip (out to May 3)  Every Spring the Genealogy Workshop of the Huntington Historical Society sponsors, and guides, a research trip to the Family History Library, run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City.  There, the researchers tap the largest genealogical library in the world.   21 Heritage Antiques Show at Huntington
10:00 am thru 5:00 pm.  Come Browse with us.  More than 40 quality dealers in room setting booths featuring jewelry, furniture, folk art, and accessories.  Refreshments are available in a quiet, relaxed environment, and entertainment is provided for selected portions of the show.

  20 Heritage Crafts Fair at the Kissam House property
The Society will bring together many of the local Crafts people who will be offering the results of their skills to the community.  Pottery, Jewelry and fabric products will be available.
 
    Volunteer lunch, 12:30 pm in the Conklin barn.
This is a big thank you for all the volunteers who made our successful year possible.

“A Return to the Conklin House:
An Architectural Guide to a Significant Historic Site”

The circa 1750 Conklin House, which is the first house museum on Long Island, has been a significant part of the Huntington community for over 250 years. In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the ownership of the Conklin House by the Huntington Historical Society please join us as Zach Studenroth discusses the architectural evolution of this significant Huntington treasure. The Conklin House, featuring the brand new exhibit “All Things Conklin”, will be open immediately following the lecture.

Rachmoninoff Concert
Join us for an evening of glorious music memorializing Sergei Rachmaninoff's time in Centerport and celebrating his music and contributions to the rich cultural history of our community.  the concert will be held at the Steinway Gallery in Melville, 505 Walt Whitman Road (Route 110)

Twelve of the best pianists and musicians in the area are donating their time and talent to raise funds for the creation and installation of a historical marker.  The marker will be placed at the location of his summer residence on the Little Neck Peninsula, not far from the Vanderbilt.
October  

Now is the time to start thinking about next year's spectacular vacation.  The Huntington Historical Society is partnering With Collette Vacations to provide the vacation of a lifetime.  Come with us and explore the Magnificent historical sights and cultures of northern Italy and the stunning Greek Islands.  Experience the breathtaking scenery of the Italian lakes region followed by a splendid 7-night Eastern Mediterranean cruise aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line Jade. 

 
  16 Sunday, October 16th, Noon to 4:00, Apple Festival,  At the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum property Noon to 4:00.  The leaves are falling and the crops are being taken in.  Apples are dropping from the trees and the Society is celebrating.  Come join in the festival.  Bring your children to play traditional games, try old-time crafts and dance to the tunes of traditional music.  And, if they dare, they can enter the scary "Boo" Barn.

“History of Huntington Potteries: Forensic Informed Conjecture” By Anthony Butera and Robert Kissam
  20 Native American Day
Spend a delightful afternoon, 2:00 to 4:00, exploring the history and culture of our Native Americans.  Learn about their traditions, skills, food, clothing and view authentic artifacts from our collections.  Crafts, games, songs and refreshments are included in the $20 per child cost.  For ages 7 – 12.  Adults must accompany children and will not be charged.

 Holiday Historic House tour, We invite you to celebrate the holiday season by joining us for this exceptional  tour between noon and 4:00 pm.  Each year in December the Huntington Historical Society arranges tours of local residences that date from Colonial times through the current century.  The owners of these houses, open their homes as a service to the community and the Society, to demonstrate life styles throughout our country's history.  Each house is chosen for its distinct design and historical details and refreshments are served, as part of the tour, at one of the Society's museums.  A  tour of the museum is included.
