Membership renewal appeal

Genealogy workshop meeting at 7:00 pm in the Conklin Barn. "Family Treasures". Our annual show and tell program. Bring an artifact, document, photograph, letter or other tangible object.

February

"Gratitude Gala" from 3:00 to 6:00 pm in the Conklin Barn. This is a big Thank you for all of the people who have helped the Huntington Historical Society have a fabulous 2007.

Conklin House lecture 1, Lecture 2:00 pm, (Refreshments 1:30). Members Free, Non members $5 "African Americans in Huntington's History" by Rex Metcalf.
This lecture will survey the rich panorama of Huntington’s African American residents who have made an impact on local and national history. Each generation, over the past 350 years of social change, has produced noteworthy contributors to literature, military service, education, religion, politics, music, commerce and more. What were their names? Where did they live? What did they do? The lecture will reveal some answers and explore these aspects of Huntington’s history as we observe Black History Month.

Genealogy Workshop meeting at 7:00 pm in the Conklin barn. "The New York State Historical Documents Inventory: Hidden Treasures in New York State Repositories" by Art Sniffin.
An overview of the program that surveyed over 1700 repositories in New York state from 1978 to 1991. The lecture will provide a variety of examples.

The Genealogy workshop and the Genealogy Federation of Long Island, along with other Genealogy organizations, are presenting a seminar at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook New York in the Student Activities Center. "Family Roots III: Where to Begin, How to Continue & Share"
8 am to 5 pm.

Genealogy Workshop meeting at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium of the Huntington Public Library, 338 Main Street. The Huntington Library and the Huntington Historical Society will present an evening demonstration of the Suffolk historic Newspapers collection. This online resource has a searchable collection of Suffolk's newspaper heritage. Dave Concar, from the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, will also provide information regarding the New York State Newspaper Project. This 20 year project locates and preserves, on microfilm, New York newspapers from across the state. All are welcome.

Conklin House lecture 3, Lecture 2:00 pm, (Refreshments 1:30). Members Free, Non members $5 "Elias Pelletreau: Long Island Silversmith and Entrepreneur" by Dean Failey|
Elias Pelletreau, who apprenticed with master New York French Huguenot silversmith Simeon Soumaine, returned to his home in Southampton, Long Island to become the most successful silversmith in rural America! A slide presentation will be included as we step back in time and enjoy this fascinating lecture.

Salt Lake City research trip (out to May 4) Every Spring the Genealogy Workshop of the Huntington Historical Society sponsors, and guides, a research trip to the Family History Library, run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City. There, the researchers tap the largest genealogical library in the world.

Sheep to Shawl Festival, At the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum property Noon till 4:00. Join us for this wonderful family event. Enjoy sheep shearing, traditional textile demonstrations by local artisans and crafters, old fashioned games and children's activities, a Petting Zoo and pony rides, and tours of our historic Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum. Lively music will be presented by the Long Island Traditional Music Association throughout the day.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building Grand Opening, noon to 4:00.
This Iconic structure was acquired by the Huntington Historical Society in 2000. That was the beginning of an ambitious eight year restoration project which has brought it back to become a focal point for the community. This opening is the culmination of this effort.

The Museum Challenge, Noon to 4 pm each day, is a historic treasure hunt for the whole family in which visitors can purchase the map, shown above, for $5. They can then follow the map to see ten different historic buildings.

Apple Festival, At the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum property Noon to 4:00. The leaves are falling and the crops are being taken in. Apples are dropping from the trees and the Society is celebrating. Come join in the festival. Bring your children to play traditional games, try old-time crafts and dance to the tunes of traditional music.

Conklin House lecture 6, Lecture 2:00 pm, (Refreshments 1:30). Members Free, Non members $5 "1958, The Year Huntington Became a Suburb" by Claudia Fortunato, Assistant to the Huntington Town Historian

Conklin lecture 7, Special Lecture: in the Conklin Barn, 7:30 to 9:00 pm (refreshments at 7:00), "Ghosts of Long Island, Stories of the Paranormal II"Local author, photographer and historian, Kerriann Flanagan Brosky, has been working with Paranormal Investigator, Joe Giaquinto, on assignment researching and investigating haunted places throughout Long Island. Ms. Brosky is the author of two books on Huntington’s history, and now she is branching out to include many untold tales in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Stories will include live interviews, legends, myths, murders and some never before told tales of the unexplainable. Free for members. $10 for non-members. Appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Dr. Ross will warm your heart and spark fond memories during this "down home' discussion about the recipes and cooking techniques of yesteryear.

Native American Day
Spend a delightful afternoon exploring the history and culture of our Native Americans. Learn about their traditions, skills, food, clothing and view authentic artifacts from our collections. Crafts, games, songs and refreshments are included in the $5 per child cost. For ages 7 – 12.

Holiday Historic House tour, We invite you to celebrate the holiday season by joining us for this exceptional tour between noon and 4:00 pm. Each year in December the Huntington Historical Society arranges tours of local residences that date from Colonial times through the current century. The owners of these houses, open their homes as a service to the community and the Society, to demonstrate life styles throughout our country's history. Each house is chosen for its distinct design and historical details and refreshments will be served, as part of the tour, at the barn of the David Conklin Farmhouse museum. A tour of the museum is included.
